CFMIP has the identified the following science questions for CFMIP4/CMIP7:
1. What physical mechanisms underly cloud feedbacks and adjustments, and how credibly do models represent these?
2. How and why do cloud feedbacks and adjustments depend on climate base state?
3. How and why do cloud feedbacks and adjustments depend on the nature of the climate forcing?
4. What coupled processes underlie the pattern of surface warming, and how and why does this affect cloud feedback?
5. What mechanisms underly cloud-circulation coupling and precipitation change, and how credibly do models represent these?
The CMIP7 DECK experiments are mandatory. For CMIP7, Fast Track experiments are high priority experiments to complete for both climate services and process understanding. CFMIP has four experiments in CMIP7 Fast Track to improve process understanding: amip-p4k, amip-piForcing, abrupt-2xCO2, and abrupt-0p5CO2.

Please see here for a summary of the CFMIP4 protocol.
The CFMIP4/CMIP7 experimental protocol will be submitted as a paper to Geophysical Model Development in late 2025.
Please raise any issues with the CFMIP Steering Committee members leading this effort (Paulo Ceppi, Alejandro Bodas-Salcedo, Mark Webb, Mark Zelinka) or the CFMIP co-chairs (Jennifer Kay, Sarah Kang).
